Dangers to Watch Out for When Using Your Debit Card and More!!!

Dangers to Watch Out for When Using Your Debit Card and More!!!

You Used Your Debit Card to Pay for Gas, an Appliance, a Rental Car, Reserve a Hotel Room or Anything Online
Buy a coffee at Starbucks with a debit card and $2.01 will be deducted from your checking account–end of story. But fill up your car for $30 and the gas station might put an $80 “hold” on your checking account for a couple of days until the station reconciles its accounts and transmits your purchase to the bank. While that money is locked up, you can get hit with overdraft charges for subsequent purchases–even if you have enough money in your account.
The worst move is to check in to a hotel with a debit card but pay the bill with a different card. The debit-card company might keep the hold for as long as 15 days, unaware that you paid with another card. Spend four nights in $250 hotel room, and, when the phantom incidentals are added in (a hotel might tack on an estimate for anticipated minibar or room service charges to the “hold”), you could lose access to $1,100 of your own money for half the month.
Overusing the ATM.
Going to the ATM allows us to avoid lines at the bank and access our funds at any time. But it also comes with fees. If you use an ATM that isn’t operated by your bank, you may have to pay fees to both your bank and the one that owns the ATM. And no matter how small those fees may be, they really add up over time. That’s why you shouldn’t run to the ATM every time you need a few dollars. You can avoid fees by going to your own bank or getting cash back when you buy something.
Running your card as credit.
There are two reasons why this is bad. The first is because merchants have to pay more for credit card transactions than debit card transactions. In most case this makes no difference in the price you pay, but some smaller merchants will charge you more for using a card that is run as credit. The other reason is that debit card transactions clear immediately, but if you run your card as credit, the transaction may not clear your account for up to 60 days. This can cause confusion if you don’t keep close tabs on the amount you’ve spent.
Buying big ticket items with your debit card.
When it comes to large purchases that may need to be returned, it’s much better to put them on your credit card and pay the balance in full than to use your debit card. That’s because if you have trouble getting your money back from the merchant, you can file a claim with your credit card issuer and receive credit immediately. If you use your debit card, you won’t get your money back until you convince the retailer to give it back to you.
Gas Stations That Can Freeze Your Funds
In 2008, SF Gate reported that scammers drained $45,000 from customers who used their debit cards to pay for gas at an Arco station in San Jose, Calif.
For this reason, it’s safer to use a credit card during gas station trips because you’ll be charged for the exact amount you spent, making it easier to detect any fraud. Conversely when you use a debit card, your account will show a hold, which can range anywhere between $50 and $75, depending on the station, and can last for days after your visit, according to CBS Moneywatch.
Restaurants and Bars Where the Card Leaves Your Sight
The danger in using your debit card at restaurants and bars is that the card has to leave your sight, which compromises your data, reports Banktime.
You may think that plunking down that debit card is the easiest way to settle a check, but in a crowded dining environment, unsuspecting prying eyes (namely the waiter who’s taking your card) can pose a real threat to your bank account.
Public Wi-Fi Locations That Can Hack Your Data
According to Private I blog, it’s much easier for hackers to steal your information through an unsecured wireless connection so don’t even think about using an ATM cardat your favorite Starbucks or Barnes & Noble. If you must use a card, fork over the credit because that will make it less of a challenge for these crooks to steal your data.
If you must do your shopping online, follow these steps on Private I blog to secure your activity.

Top 10 tips for a healthy heart

Top 10 tips for a healthy heart

There are many steps people can take to try to prevent heart disease. You can start by concentrating on key lifestyle areas such as eating, exercise, smoking and drinking, and considering other factors like family history, diabetes and stress. Here are 10 top tips for a healthy heart
A human heart
1. Stop smoking. Quitting smoking is the single most important thing a person can do to live longer. If you are a smoker, you are twice as likely to have a heart attack than anon-smoker. But from the moment you stop smoking, the risk of heart attack starts to reduce. With public smoking bans recently introduced, there has never been a better time to give up.
2. Cut down on salt. Too much salt can cause high blood pressure, which increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease. Avoid foods like crisps, salted nuts, canned and packet soups and sauces, baked beans and canned vegetables, pork pies, pizzas and ready meals. Many breakfast cereals and breads that appear healthy also contain high levels of salt, so keep your eye on these too.
3. Watch your diet. A healthy diet can help to reduce the risk of developing heart disease, and can also help increase the chances of survival after a heart attack. You should try to have a balanced diet, containing plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, oily fish, starchy foods such as wholegrain bread, pasta and rice. Avoid foods like biscuits, cakes, pastries and dairy products that are high in saturated fats and sugar.
4. Monitor your alcohol. Too much alcohol can damage the heart muscle, increase blood pressure and also lead to weight gain. Binge drinking will increase your risk of having a heart attack, so you should aim to limit your intake to one to two units a day.
5. Get active. The heart is a muscle and it needs exercise to keep fit so that it can pump blood efficiently round your body with each heart beat. You should aim for 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a day. If this seems too daunting, start off gently and build up gradually. Keeping fit not only benefits your physical health – it improves your mental health and wellbeing too.
6. Manage your weight. The number of people who are overweight in Britain is rising fast – already more than half of the adult population is overweight or obese. Carrying a lot of extra weight as fat can greatly affect your health and increases the risk of life-threatening conditions such as coronary heart disease and diabetes. If you are overweight or obese, start by making small, but healthy changes to what you eat, and try to become more active.
7. Get your blood pressure and cholesterol levels checked by your GP. The higher your blood pressure, the shorter your life expectancy. People with high blood pressure run a higher risk of having a stroke or a heart attack. High levels of cholesterol in the blood – produced by the liver from saturated fats – can lead to fatty deposits in your coronary arteries that increase your risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, and diseases that affect the circulation. You can help lower your cholesterol level by exercising and eating high-fibre foods such as porridge, beans, pulses, lentils, nuts, fruits and vegetables.
8. Learn to manage your stress levels. If you find things are getting on top of you, you may fail to eat properly, smoke and drink too much and this may increase your risk of a heart attack.
9. Check your family history . If a close relative is at risk of developing coronary heart disease from smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lack of physical activity, obesity and diabetes, then you could be at risk too.
10. Make sure you can recognize the early signs of coronary heart disease . Tightness or discomfort in the chest, neck, arm or stomach which comes on when you exert yourself but goes away with rest may be the first sign of angina, which can lead to a heart attack if left untreated.

How to Sell Your items Online for Free

How to Sell Your items Online for Free

  1. The first place to go is AuctionsHunter.com. Here you can list items and even advertise garage sales Free. This is also another place you can advertise your business for Post Wanted Ads for free.
  2. The Second Place to go is Craigslist. Though it is harder to unload higher-priced items because there are so many people out there who try to scam you. Just spam the emails asking to mail you cashier’s check or pay extra in shipping. They now even talk about going through Paypal, but it’s the same
  3. Finally there is USFreeClassifieds.com. This is also another place you can advertise your business or free if you would like to go that route. I’ve gotten a decent response from this, but recommend AuctionsHunter.com since you get zero listing fees and end of auction fees. Its a brand new Auction site gaining quick momentum.

Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Finances

Tips and Tricks to Improve Your Finances - Viewer Opinion

  1. Use cash. Instead of charging things to credit cards or debit cards, use cash for non-bill spending such as eating out, gas, groceries. Spending cash makes the spending more real, and there’s an added advantage of knowing when you’re out of cash, instead of spending more than you
  2. Stay home. Going out makes you more likely to spend unnecessarily. You eat at restaurants, go to the mall, stop at the gas station for snacks. It’s hard to avoid spending when you’re on the road. Instead, stay home, and find free entertainment. It’s also a great way to bond with your family.
  3. Cook at home. I know, it seems more difficult than eating out. But it doesn’t have to be hard. Throw together a quick stir-fry with frozen veggies and either boneless chicken or (my favorite) tofu with soy sauce or tamari. Make home-made pizza with a ready-made crust, some sauce, cheese and veggies. Put some spices on something and throw it in the oven while you cook some brown rice. Not only is this much cheaper than eating out, but it’s healthier.
  4. Exercise. Staying healthy is the best way to avoid costly medical bills later.
  5. The spreadsheet tracker hack. There are expensive programs like MS Money, Quicken, and the like that will do amazing things with your financial information. There are even free ones, on your desktop or online, that can do all kinds of things.
  6. Pay savings and debt first. When you sit down to pay your bills (I do them all online), make the first bills you pay be your savings transfer and your debt payments. If not, if you pay them last … you’ll often end up shortchanging them. But if you pay them first, you’ll make sure you still pay your rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries and gas … so you’ll just cut back on other spending.
  7. Exercise at home. Some of you will disagree with me on this, which is OK — everyone should do what works for them. But I’ve saved a lot of money that I used to spend on gyms by just running at the local track or on the roads in my neighborhood, and buying some simple weights and a chin-up bar. I do a lot of body-weight exercises (pushups, Hindu squats, lunges, pullups, dips, etc.) and I don’t need a gym for those things.
  8. Cut out cable TV. I’m not saying I don’t watch TV — I watch DVDs, so that I’m sure that what I’m watching is something great, rather than the useless stuff you find on TV most of the time. And there’s a lot of it online for free if you look. Not a huge savings, but it adds up.
  9. Use online savings. I use Emigrant Direct, but ING Direct is also popular, as are a bunch of other online banks. Not only do you earn like twice the interest of a normal bank savings account, but if you don’t get the ATM account it’s not as easy to withdraw money … making it less likely that you’ll get money out on an impulse.
  10. Teach your kids about advertising, saving, earning, and gift-giving. If you have kids, educating them about money will save you a lot of money in the long run. If they know about how advertising influences them in tricky ways, they’ll be less likely to demand (OK, beg and plead for) the latest fad toys. If they know about saving and earning money, they’ll respect the money that you earn, and that you are trying to save. If they know that gift-giving doesn’t have to be about spending a lot of money (see above), they won’t necessarily want expensive stuff.

You take your iPhone everywhere. Which means you might leave it anywhere. Whether it’s at the office in a conference room or under a pillow on your couch, chances are it won’t be lost for long.

Locate your iPhone on a map
People misplace things all the time. Fortunately, if you lose your iPhone, Find My iPhone can help. Go to Settings, tap iCloud, and enable Find My iPhone.* Then if you misplace your iPhone, you can sign in to icloud.com from any computer web browser or use the Find My iPhone app on another iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to display its approximate location on a map. It’s easy to activate this feature on your iPhone. All it takes is a few easy steps.

Display a message or play a sound to help you find it
Say you’ve just used Find My iPhone, and it turns out you left your iPhone at the doctor’s office. You can write a message and display it on your screen. Something like, “Oops, left my iPhone behind. Please call me at 408-555-0198.” Your message appears, even if the screen is locked. And if the map shows that your iPhone is nearby — perhaps in your office under a pile of papers — yet you still can’t find it, you can tell Find My iPhone to play a sound that overrides the volume or silent setting.

Find My iPhone app
Because the unexpected happens in the most unexpected places, the Find My iPhone app can help you locate your missing iPhone even when you don’t have access to a computer. It’s free on the App Store and available to anyone. So if you misplace your device, download the Find My iPhone app on a friend’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and sign in to find your iPhone.

6 Xbox 360 tricks you may not be aware of

6 Xbox 360 tricks you may not be aware of

1. Connect your Xbox 360 to two screens at once
If you've got one of the component/composite dual video cables – the one that comes in the box with most 360s – you can have your console display its gamey goodness on two TVs simultaneously. The trick is to flick the cable's switch to Standard Definition but hook up the composite (yellow) cable to one screen and the component (the red, green, blue) cables to another. It won't be high-def, but it could be handy if you're staging a mini LAN party and want to set up a display for bored spectators to point their eyes at.

2. Play your own music in original Xbox games
That you can fire up your own MP3s during a 360 game is common knowledge, but it doesn't work if you're playing a title from the original Xbox. There's a way around it – start playing your album or playlist before you load the game, and it'll keep on playing once you do fire the title up. The game's own music won't be muted, however, so if you can't do that in its settings you'll go mad from the weird cacophony.

3. Play Xbox 360 games online for free – without a Live account
That you have to pay a subscription for online gaming, something that's free on other consoles and on the PC, is perhaps the 360's greatest bugbear. Stage your own form of peaceful process by playing online without paying a penny. You'll need XLink Kai, a free app you run from a PC on the same network as the console that tricks the 360 into thinking the internet is a LAN.
So it'll treat remote opponents as though they're in the same room as you – and you don't have to pay for local multiplayer. Clever! One snag – Microsoft has set the 360 to boot out anyone with a ping higher than 30ms, so you'll have to be selective about who you play with. Local chums are best, not your Chinese penpal.

4. Connect your Xbox 360 to a wireless network without an official adaptor
The good news is you don't have to drop $65 on Microsoft's offensively overpriced Wi-Fi adaptor. The bad news is you'll need a laptop with W-Fi to do it. Head to Control Panel – Network Connections (In Windows XP) or Network & Sharing Center – Manage Network Connections (in Vista). Select the Local Area Connection and the Wireless Network Connection at once, then right-click and hit 'bridge connections'.
Disconnect then reconnect to your wireless network, run a network cable from the laptop's Ethernet port to the 360's, and you should be good to go. Unfortunately, you may have to remove the bridge (repeat the above process and you'll see the option) whenever you want to browse the net with the laptop.

5. Play music from your iPod
Microsoft doesn't exactly shout about the fact it plays nice with a device made by uber-rival Apple. Hidden in the depths of the Marketplace, you'll find a teeny download called 'optional iPod support'. Once you've grabbed that, plug in your iPod (iPhones aren't supported yet, sadly) and head to the Media Blade. You'll see your pod appear there, and can now browse its music by album, artist, genre or whatever. It'll also charge via the USB port, usefully.

6. Use any HDMI cable and still get digital surround sound
Though the newer 360s have an HDMI output for optimal video quality, they've built the ports in such a way that you can't have the standard component/composite video cable, with its crucial optical audio output, plugged in at the same time as HDMI. Instead, you're supposed to drop a frightening amount of money on the official HDMI cable with audio adapter. Balls to that. See the big plastic box at the end of the standard video cable that connects to the console? Wedge a knife or screwdriver into the join and twist to pop it off. The result looks messy, but is small enough to plug in alongside a standard, cheapo HDMI cable.

2. Social Networks

Social networking sites, particularly Facebook and Twitter, represent another way to find cheap iPads online. You’ll basically be looking for individuals who are disposing their used units, or for people who got an iPad (e.g., as a gift or on a contest) but don’t really need or want it. You can search on Google for “site:facebook.com selling ipad”, for example, to get a list of posts on Facebook mentioning an iPad for sale. 4. Deals and Group Buying Sites

Deal sites are getting popular today. Most if not all of them really offer nice deals. Although not too much on gadgets and accessories, you can still find considerable number of deal sites offering iPads at cheaper prices. A couple we recommend: Groupon and Living Social.

5. Online Forums

If you’re into online community forums, there are several iPad-specific forums with their specific marketplaces. I’m pretty sure you’ll find cheaper iPads being sold by Forum members. IpadForums.net is one of the most popular, so check it out first.
